Upsherin invite
Please join us on Sunday, January 29 at 10:30am at
Harold Bell Wright Park for Desmond and Simon’s
upsherin (Yiddish for cutting-off). We’ll be cutting
their hair for the first time and making a party of
it. We’ll have bagels and other bruncherai, a little
singing, a little snipping, and something sweet.
Many people have asked us what upsherin is all about.
The tradition is rooted in the Torah, which says that
the fruits of a tree are “orlah” (off-limits) for the
first three years of the tree’s life (Leviticus
19:23). This practice has been extended to children’s
hair by analogy.
